Dec.29.2005 :: NYC MEDIA EVENT: Combat Piracy on Bit Torrent
Invitation to 1/11 FMTS Demo
Alston & Bird LLP (www.alston.com), the Distributed Computing Industry Association (www.DCIA.info), and Friend Media Technology Systems Ltd. (FMTS) would like to invite you and a small select group of other leading technology and new media journalists to view an initial live demonstration of new software developed by FMTS, which will be used to combat piracy on BitTorrent and similar swarming networks, and also to gather information from peer-to-peer (P2P) networks.
Since we discussed preliminary concepts for this software with major music label and movie studio executives earlier this year, Jonathan Friend and his team have fully developed the system and are now prepared to demonstrate it in real-time to block the download of specified music and video content on a particular torrent and to report an unprecedented level of information collected from P2P network usage.
· Time & Place and RSVPs
The demonstration will take place at 4:00 PM on Wednesday January 11th in the offices of Alston & Bird, 90 Park Avenue, 15th Floor, New York, NY. Refreshments will be served.
Please let Aydin Caginalp (acaginalp@alston.com), Marty Lafferty (marty@dcia.info), Karen Kaplowitz (karen@dcia.info), or Denise Friend (denise.friend@friendllp.com) know if you will be able to attend. We will be glad to provide more details and answer your questions in advance.
· Content Testing Logistics
The demonstration will involve the downloading and blocking of music files and videos that have been uploaded without the copyright owners' consent. Please note that for the test, participating rights holders who wish to have their content demonstrated will have provided the rights to download and then block their material.
In addition to major established entertainment industry companies, DCIA Members INTENT MediaWorks (www.intentmediaworks.com) and Scooter Scudieri (www.firstrockstar.com) have submitted test content for this purpose: Scooter's Songwriters Hall of Fame award-winning single THE USUAL from his album ANCIENT RITUALS and his highly popular music video MOTHER OF GOD will be tested.
The demonstration will be set up at the offices of Alston & Bird. To prove that the software is effective, trusted representatives of attending journalists are also welcome to concurrently take part using their own PCs, first downloading the test content for which consent has been given and then, when FMTS activates the protection system, attempting to download and play the selected copyrighted work again.
This validation download activity can be done either in a separate office at Alston & Bird or completely offsite with an individual, chosen by the respective participating journalist, who has Internet and telephone connectivity. Please call or e-mail Aydin, Marty, Karen, or Denise with any questions. Thanks very much.
