In 1978 I thought life was great I was nine years old My world was Star Wars, Kiss, and roller skates I had no idea about Saigon and the war I had never heard about the PLO While the Protestants and Catholics were tearing it up I had no idea that we had dropped the bomb Now I know of suffering, pain, and desperate war The untold lives of millions that have died in Darfur The Middle East is burning right at heaven's gate All governments capitalize on hate In 1978 I thought life was great In the year 2008, our daughter thinks life is great Her world is Care Bears, Barbie, ice cream sodas, friends, and roller skates But, every once in awhile I catch her watching the fire on tv And I wonder how long it could possibly be Before our sweet little girl has a broken heart Watching the world tear itself apart In 1978 I thought life was great
